Top Five Things to Get to Know Me
Let's just do it! That's the advice I was given so let's roll with it.
I bloody love a list, top fives are like an infinite source of entertainment for me. So! Here are a collection of top fives that will give you an insight into: Beth Moore.
(for my sanity, these lists are as of the day I'm writing (29th of April 2024) and are done in aid of getting across who I am as a person rather than my definitive top five favourites)
TOP FIVE SONGS
Police Truck - Dead Kennedys
I have become a big punk fan in the last few years. The Dead Kennedys are easily one of my favourite punk bands. I like their (the original band I fear I have to stress) politics, sound, and energy. Police Truck is fun and angry as fuck. ACAB😍
I'm Your Man - Wham!
Now to the other end of the spectrum. I adore eighties pop, in fact, I adore everything about the 1980s. Wham! are a great representation of a lot of what I love about that decade, but mainly they're fun, pure get you on your feet and out of a slump music. I'm Your Man is my karaoke song.
Security - Amyl and The Sniffers
I discovered Amyl and The Sniffers at Glastonbury in 2022 and I was in AWE. I use this song when asked for walk out music at comedy gigs. Amy Taylor is a fucking legend.
Cosmic Dancer - T. Rex
People are often surprised to find I rarely listen to music to be relaxed. I predominantly listen to music to feel energised, enraged, and just to get shit out of my system. If I were to relax though, this song does make me feel like I am jumping on a bed in slow motion much like Billy Elliot. I want this song played at my funeral.
Somebody to Love - Queen
I will refrain from speaking on my love of Queen at this time but! I think the quality I love above all in music is campness and Queen's take on seventies rock is pure visceral, guttural camp oozing with grandeur and I'll consume it by the fucking bucketful every! time!
TOP FIVE MEALS
Pre-cursor: I am vegan and I fucking love food.
Lasagna
Why do we bother eating anything else? This hits all the major food groups right?
Stew and Dumplings
Oh yeah, because you can't put gravy with lasagna.
Burritos
Just Mexican food full stop. Tacos, Enchiladas, I'm a BIG fan. But, as you can tell, I like a hearty meal so Burritos pip the post for me.
Ramen
Fairly new to Asian cuisine but quickly becoming obsessed. Again, hearty, warm, flavourful food that feels like a hug for the soul.
Fry Up
Fuck me, I just love a massive plate of food. In case you're interested: Bacon, Scrambled Spicy Tofu, Sausages, Baked Beans, Black Pudding, Hash Browns, Mushrooms, Toast, Avocado, and Sun-dried Tomatoes. How many of each? Depends on my mood but always heavy on the Hash Browns and Bacon.
TOP FIVE DRINKS
Cup of Tea
Tea Bag, we keep Tetley, but I enjoy PG too. Generous tea spoon of set honey. Pour boiling water. Leave for a minute or two, preferably two. Strain teabag and dispose of it. Pour soya milk in until a sensible colour. Consume about five/ten minutes after that. I will drink Yorkshire too but I wouldn't brew it for as long - I know, what a wet wipe.
Chocolate? Milkshake
Essentially if you have some form of vegan friendly, chocolate-y milkshake on your menu I am ordering it with all the trimmings without hesitation and certainly without consideration for whatever else I am eating or doing that day. Hence the time I drank a mint choc chip milkshake the size of my head before going to a beer festival - sorry gut😍
Mojito
The best cocktail. If cocktails weren't so fucking expensive I would drink them whenever I go out and when I can afford them, this is my GO TO. I'll take variations of the classic too, I daydream often about a raspberry and coconut one I get when I visit Manchester.
Caipirinha
Yeah, I like when a drink makes my face contort, that's when you know its good.
Cider
I don't think I can pick a specific kind, it's more of a feeling. Ice cold cider in the sun with beautiful company and I feel like something inside me is healing. That sounds- I actually have a really healthy relationship with alcohol no cause for alarm gang.
TOP FIVE FILMS
American Psycho (2000)
Ah. American Psycho. I did my final year dissertation on American Psycho. I have such a unique relationship with this film, I wouldn't even say its an all-time favourite it just feels like it has become a part of my identity. Mary Harron you nailed it, this film is so funny.
Evil Dead II (1987)
I adore eighties, heavy on the practical effects gore, horror. I remember the first time I saw this film I fell off the sofa laughing. I had never seen anything like this before and I couldn't comprehend what I was seeing. I'd never seen such a heavily 'handcrafted' horror before and I was in awe of it all. More importantly though, horror could be hilarious? Bruce Campbell, a god amongst men.
Secretary (2002)
This film has had me in a chokehold for a year now (no pun intended). I just- I will write a whole post about this film no doubt. I love romantic comedies, like LOVE them, and I love weirdos and weird shit. Hello, Secretary (2002).
Little Miss Sunshine (2006)
This is my favourite film of all time. I love coming-of-age films and this feels like it there to help you through every stage in life. I just feel warm whenever I think about Little Miss Sunshine. Perfection.
It's A Wonderful Life (1946)
Although, if you asked me to save one film in a fire, I'm saving It's A Wonderful Life. I believe this to be THE film everyone should watch at least once in their life and then proceed to watch every Christmas there after. At least that's what happened to me when I was like 14/15 and every year this film emotional resets me with hope, faith, and love for the new year ahead.
TOP FIVE THINGS TO DO
Watch Films
I downloaded Letterboxd last year and I have become a glutton for film, good and bad. I really enjoy my own company when watching a film, its probably the main way I unwind. However, you can't beat sharing a film with someone you love, it's a beautiful thing.
Dance
I love dancing around - not like 'properly', as in trained or educated, but as in whack on a tune and get a load of shit out of my system. I dance around my house every day, I love a dance floor as long as you're playing something I can work with, and I fucking love moshing. Nothing revolutionary, thrashing about just makes me feel better.
Comedy
I do stand-up. I like writing it, I like performing it, and I love the person I am on stage. She's really fucking brave and bad-ass and funny and says really cool things. I like having a space to be silly and angry in which I can invite people to share those feelings with me.
Having a Hyper-fixation
I can't enjoy something a 'normal' amount, if something hooks me in the right way I am all in. I'm also going to say that this includes having a celebrity crush, I fucking love having a celebrity crush - accept I am straight and celebrity men have a habit of being disappointing😀! Please do ask me about my extensive knowledge on: the band Queen, the comic Rik Mayall, and my personal best and proudest fixation James Spader's filmography.
Spend Time with my Family, Boyfriend and Friends
I have the best collection of friends in the world. Time spent with any of them is invigorating, dear, and hilarious. To know them, let alone know them, is one of my proudest achievements.
My boyfriend doesn't like Wham!. The other day I could not get out bed. We listened to Wham! for an hour and danced around the kitchen and laughed hard. My boyfriend is my best friend.
My other proudest thing is that everyone I know fucking loves my family. I fucking love my parents and I fucking love my little brother, I could cry just thinking about them. They're the best people in the world. Nothing enriches me like just five minutes spent in their company.
TOP FIVE INFLUENCES/IDOLS/HEROES/I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO CALL THEM
Laura Bates
I discovered Laura's work in my second year at university and properly got into it in my third. Her writing has, without exaggeration, revolutionised my life. The work Laura does for women astounds me, most poignantly though I would argue it is accessible, digestible and HOPEFUL. I am now set on a path of wanting to create work that would sit beside hers. Women are fucking incredible.
Nick Helm
I started devouring comedy at a young age. I watched all the classic British sitcoms throughout my teenage years and they all helped in my fundamental development in some way. I started to get into stand-ups in my later teens and Nick's work ticked a box that had been missing. Someone creating shows that weren't just straight stand-up, someone being angry and funny, and most poignantly someone talking candidly about their mental health. Everything I'd had ideas about creating in the future felt achievable, and when I then met Nick for the first time, and now the several subsequent times, I have achieved lots of those things with his kind words and support.
Rik Mayall
Rik fucking Mayall. In terms of a 'celebrity', Rik Mayall is by far the biggest influence on the young woman that I am today. I certainly do plan to write a whole post dedicated to Rik. What I will say here though is, I just wish I could thank him.
My Friends
I have a very near and dear collection of friends who I fear I could not exist without. I mean this in the sense that I could not be the woman I am today without the love and support they have provided me throughout my formative years. I exist today with the courage they installed in me.
My Parents
My parents are superheroes. They truly love me unconditionally and with that I know I can do anything.
TOP FIVE GOALS FOR THIS BLOG
Actually Write
I'm not going to set a firm goal like once a week, but I hope I do actually post stuff.
Write for Me
I've had so many ideas bubbling around for so long, I'm an academic but not everything requires an academic level of study and sometimes I don't want to talk about things academically. I want to be anything from angry, happy, sad, horny, funny, or silly when I write. I hope I always maintain my values and write about what's important to me. Essentially I hope the people pleaser in me never edits this blog.
Write about Media
I think the predominant topic for this blog will be the media I am consuming - film, tv, music, etc and how it is influencing my life. I hope I write with purpose but also flush everything out of my system.
Write without Fear
Easier said then done. I'm going to TRY to write without worrying about what anyone thinks - including not writing grammatically perfectly etc etc blah blah (that's my lazy arse covered).
Write for Fun
:)
OKAY! FINE! MY TOP FIVE CELEBRITY CRUSHES
(top five formative ones okay, not like legit current top five)
Mat Baynton - Horrible Histories
Bless the hearts of my generation and our childish love of this man. I just remember this being the first time I properly 'fancied' someone.
Hugh Jackman - Specifically Wolverine
First time I saw a man's body and found it sexually attractive, bless.
Hugh Grant
My teenage years were dominated by watching this man's films. Him and his characters are annoyingly charming and funny with an unfortunately sexy sleaze to him - for my other opinions on Hugh Grant see my comedy. I still have a soft spot for floppy hair.
Ralph Fiennes
I do believe that in more recent years Ralph has said some wet wipe wanky problematic things and therefore he is no longer a man I fancy, BUT! We must list Ralph, for it was Ralph who made me realise I like an older man, a weirder man, and that I love asking people who their *hear me out* celebrity crushes are.
James Spader
JAMES SPADER! Oh this little freak has got my heart! This man possess a quality that I can not put into words, I have tried writing this sentence several times and I can't convey it to you now but I will someday. Anyway, he's a freak in the best way, and most importantly as far as I know he hasn't done anything controversial - if you know he has, respectfully, keep it to yourself! I've put too much time into being a fan of this man for him to have said something rogue twenty years ago - DON'T let me down Spader.
PLEASE DO COMMENT YOUR OWN CRUSHES, ESPECIALLY THOSE HEAR ME OUT ONES - anyway thanks, bye x
(p.s. legit top current top five with absolute no explanation or justification or order: James Spader, Jeff Combs, James Marsters, Kurt Russell, and Ryan Gosling)
